A solemn memorial Mass was held at St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco on January 18 for Bishop Javier Echevarría, Msgr. James Kelly presiding. Bishop Javier passed away on December 12 on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, to whom he had a special devotion. Masses were celebrated around the world for the repose of his soul.
Msgr. Fernando Ocáriz, Auxilary Vicar of Opus Dei, gave the homily at the funeral Mass in Rome's St. Eugenia's Basilica, and said in closing, " ... Let us place our prayer for Bishop Javier Echevarría in the hands of our Lady, spes nostra, our hope, while giving thanks to God for having given us this good and faithful shepherd."
On hearing the news, Pope Francis sent his condolences, in his comments thanking God for his "constant service of love to the Church and souls", and underlining his "fatherly testimony of priestly and episcopal life. "
